CHAPTER 11
Mo and Tony chatted over breakfast. At one point, a portly man with thinning hair and a shiny face dripping with perspiration headed toward their table. Tony's back was to the man, but when he saw the look on Mo's face he stood and turned around. The man skittered to the door like a cockroach in the light.
"I forgot about that mess," Mo sighed, letting her fork drop with a clatter. She had to cover her mouth when the irony of the situation nearly overcame her. The folks of Sinful were angry that she was looking for her real father, but some were lining up and lying for that honor because of her reward money.
Eventually Tony looked at his watch with regret. "I'm sorry, Mo, but I'm on patrol today which means I have to run."
Mo stood while Tony went to pay, then she told him. "Your timing is good. Carter just left, so let's go see him walk buttless."
Outside Francine's, Mo yelled shamelessly. "Deputy, your drawers are drooping. Grow a pair!"
Carter was only a few steps ahead of them. Instead of replying he just waved his newspaper and Mo stopped. Tony had to come back for her. "What's wrong?"
She gave him a puzzled look. "I'm not sure, but will you ask Carter if I can have his newspaper? I don't think he'll give it to me." Tony shrugged and ran to catch up with Carter, returning a minute later with the newspaper.
"Carter said you took all his padding," Tony told her as he handed her the newspaper. Mo smiled even as she scanned the headline on the front page. Inside, she went up in flames but she kept a light tone and a smile on her face until Tony left for work.
Then she yanked her cellphone and called Jo.
"Moses, don't even say it," Jo warned. "I can't believe we got taken in by that..." She said a few words that wouldn't get printed in a newspaper article.
"Why would he lie to us?" Mo asked as she read the headline Hawthorne Mitchell Announces His Candidacy for State Representative.
Jo snorted. "A- he's a lawyer and politician. B- he's a dirty one. C- he's a lying, dirty politician trying to cover his dirty past!"
"So what did he hope to gain by lying to us?" Mo asked.
"He was 'playing nice' for round one. Which means he was hoping I'd have a juicy article about his alternative lifestyle printed so he could sue for libel. I bet he was fuming when he didn't see it in print this morning!"
"And me?"
"He used you and got you to admit that he wasn't your father. I guarantee he recorded our conversation and will edit it to serve his purposes. So if that comes up during his campaign he'll tell the press exactly what you told him." Jo was quiet for a few seconds and Mo knew she was formulating a plan. "Mo, please tell me you still have the box from Annie."
Mo squeaked and hung up on Jo.
